Detail matters
The specifics of how we do house rewiring.
Rewiring a house is one of the biggest single pieces of work a homeowner will ever commission from an electrician. The difference between a rewire that ages gracefully and one that gets torn out again in ten years comes down to detail — cable routing, joint minimisation, correct cable selection, and testing that actually catches marginal faults.
Full rewire vs. partial rewire
A full rewire replaces every fixed cable and every accessory in the property along with the consumer unit. A partial rewire targets specific circuits — commonly the kitchen ring, the shower circuit or an outbuilding supply — and updates the consumer unit if it can't accept the new protection. On survey we'll tell you honestly which route makes sense. On a 1970s three-bed with a wooden fuse board and rubber cable in the loft, a partial rewire is usually a false economy. On a 1990s house with a modern board and one dodgy circuit, a targeted rewire may be all that's needed.
Cable and accessories we use
Standard fixed wiring is 6491X or twin-and-earth 6242Y in appropriate sizes: 1.0 mm² or 1.5 mm² for lighting, 2.5 mm² for ring finals, 4 mm² or 6 mm² for cooker and shower circuits, and 10 mm² or 16 mm² for EV chargepoints where required. Accessories are typically MK Logic Plus or equivalent trade-grade — not the cheapest boxes on the shelf, and not the boutique brands that carry a premium without adding safety.
Making good, and what to expect
Rewires are opened-up work. Expect floorboards up in most rooms, small chases cut in plaster around accessories, and access created into ceiling voids. We chase and re-fill accessory positions ready for a decorator, and we sheet and vacuum every day. We don't skim plaster or re-paint — that's a decorator's job — and we tell you that up front so there are no surprises when the last circuit is tested.
Rented and HMO properties
As NICEIC Rental Sector Scheme installers we regularly rewire between tenancies for landlords and letting agents in Crewe and Nantwich. Where possible we plan the work around a void period, coordinate with your gas engineer if a boiler swap is happening at the same time, and issue landlord-ready certification the day we finish so the property can be re-let immediately.
New builds, extensions and loft conversions
Rewires on extended homes usually mean tying new circuits into an existing installation. We test the existing installation first — there is no point wiring a beautiful extension onto a consumer unit that is about to be condemned — and quote either a partial rewire that lifts the whole property to a compliant standard or a clean split with a new sub-main.
