Adding to an existing installation looks easy and is where most cowboy work happens. Done properly it's invisible, certified, and adds value to the property. Done badly it's an FI on the next EICR and a discount at the next sale.
Sockets — spurs, ring extensions and radials
Where we can, we run new points as unfused spurs off a healthy ring — cheaper and quicker. Where the ring is already at capacity, we either add a fused spur or run a new radial circuit from the consumer unit. Decision made on the day based on the existing circuit's health, not on what's fastest.
Dedicated circuits — when they're needed
Electric showers, induction hobs, EV chargers, workshop tools, immersion heaters, tumble dryers on continuous use, and any single appliance drawing over 16 A continuously belong on their own circuit. We size the cable (2.5 mm², 4 mm², 6 mm² or 10 mm²) to the load and cable route, and protect it with an RCBO sized to the appliance.
USB, USB-C and TV / data outlets
Modern combi sockets integrate USB-A and USB-C at 20 W into a standard back box — perfect for bedsides, desks and kitchens. TV points, CAT6 data and coaxial can be added at the same time on the same chase, all terminated properly to standard.
Outbuildings and garden supplies
Sheds, garages and garden studios usually mean an SWA cable run from the house, terminated into a garage consumer unit with RCD protection. Handled with the outdoor and garden electrics workflow — see that page for cable burial depths, marker tape and IP ratings.
Kitchens and home offices
Kitchens deserve dedicated ring finals in addition to the appliance circuits — plus USB above worktops, task lighting circuits, and often a data point behind the fridge for smart displays. Home offices benefit from double sockets at desk height, a spare on the opposite wall, and CAT6 if the router isn't in the room.
